A thought or two on Apple
I think Steve Jobs knows the fickle consumer market quite well. Think back to the iPhone’s introduction. Given the wealth of possibilities that the “phone as a platform” has enabled, beyond traditional tasks such as voice communication, why call it a phone? Because he knows how fickle consumers can be when adopting new technology. A PR campaign for a new device that has it’s roots in a phone, something we all know, is way more palatable than a “portable computer”, which is what it really is (and besides, how many people do you know that find using their computer a pretty frustrating experience, excluding Mac weenies?) I am guessing that a product push centered around people carrying computers wherever they are would have been met with a ton of resistance from a nontechnical consumer crowd.
